Hello everyone! I am helping my children with their People To People Student Ambassador Fundraising for their “Land of the Rising Sun” trip to Japan this summer and I’m reaching out to my social network for financial support.
People To People is a long recognized and respected educational travel provider for more than 50 years for many young U.S. students. There are programs to Europe, Asia, South America, South Pacific, and North America and even to Antarctica Peninsula. The programs have enriched children through education by exposing them to different cultures, engaging in home-stays and developing their leadership skills by meeting with heads of states at time discussing global issues and learning International politics. They will both receive high school credit through Washington School of World Studies.

A bit about my kids … Rosario Angelina (16) has been learning Japanese for 4 years and plans on majoring in Anthropology and Japanese in college. She has been on Honor Roll and Principal’s list all through high school and is taking 2 AP courses this year and is maintaining “A” averages in both. Rosario has been dancing since she was three in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Horton (Modern) and Clogging. Yes, Clogging. In the beginning, for two years she clogged or tapped or whatever they call it around the house with shoes, no shoes, clogging shoes, etc. to the point we didn’t even know someone was knocking at the door because we just thought it was Rosario. My son, Bernard Sidney, Jr. (14) has just as challenging a schedule with working on getting straight “As” for the first time. Last year he was close with 5 As and a B. He is on track except he doesn’t like Social Studies that much so he has to work especially hard in that subject. Bernard struggled with his reading at a very young age, but really worked hard to turn it around. Not making excuses for him, but he did have 2 angioplasty at 18 months and 7 years old because of a heart condition, but that didn’t stop him at all from getting his work done in school. Bernard also runs track running the 200m, 400m, 4 by 100m and 4 by 400m relay teams. Their team ran a personal best this past Saturday for the 4 by 100m running 52:18. The fastest time for 13-14 year old boys is 48:07(!!!), but still impressive.
During these economic times, it has been challenging for folks to give, but we are hoping that you can reach just a little deeper and give whatever you can to help the kids really experience the Japanese culture. They will not only visit and experience activities like Anime, but learn the traditions of Japan through classical arts of Calligraphy, Tea Ceremony and Kyogen Dance. Their final stop is Hiroshima where they will visit the Peace Museum and one of the main reasons President Eisenhower created People To People. He was instrumental in ending World War II, but he also understood that if we are to have peace, it must begin with the children. This is one of many trips that fosters and embrace the ideas of global citizenship through cultural education.
I hope you can find it in your hearts to contribute to our kids’ education, adventure, and their future. We are looking for business sponsorship as well, so please pass this message along. In support of Ada Lovelace Day, my choice blog about a woman scientist is Valerie L. Thomas. She is truly an unsung hero. Did you know she has a patent on illusion transmitter transmitting three dimensional illusions of an object to a real image? You can read more at the U.S. Patent site. After Thomas received her Physics degree, she went to work for NASA as a mathematical data analyst. Later she was Project Manager of the image processing system on LandSat, the first satellite that sent images from space. Today we are afforded great opportunities to see magnificent photos from outer space. Her career flourished at NASA and was instrumental in many high-profile projects. In addition to her outstanding career accomplishments and contributions, Valerie Thomas is a dedicated advocate for young African Americans and has a true commitment to giving back to the community. To this day, she spends a great deal of her time speaking at elementary schools all the way up to college to promote more African American young people in the field of science and engineering. Ms. Thomas is a great role-model for women and minorities as a professional true to her field and dedication to scientific possibilities.
Who is your role model? In support of Ada Lovelace Day and women in science and technology around the world, Valerie L. Thomas is a great Woman, African American, American and scientist.
